Just some brief notices so y'all know we aren't dead yet:
  1. This web server will be unreachable for all or part of the period from 0800-1800 BST on Tuesday 21st October 2008. This is due to a reconfiguration of the power supply to some network devices, over which I have no control.
  2. The Leeds Ecovillage Project is changing it's name to LILAC (Low-Impact Living Affordable Community), a formal announcement will follow shortly.
  3. Our next newsletter will be coming soon.

This is still a work in progress, but it shows the basic ideas for how the social, financial and environmental aspects of our plan will work together. There will be much more detail when we know where we'll be sited.

We are Leeds Ecovillage.

In the Leeds Ecovillage project, we're motivated by our shared goal of caring for the Earth so we're creating housing to the highest ecological design standards we can. Our first phase of development will be a co-housing project with about 20 units, housing 50 people. We are using this model because of the social and environmental benefits that come from sharing, particularly in improving the quality of people's lives, reducing consumption of scarce resources, and avoiding harm to our local and global environment.

What sets us apart from some other 'eco' projects is that we're committed to cooperative practices and horizontal organisation. We intend to live in it when it's built. It will be founded on a Community Land Trust and a Mutual Home Ownership scheme, so that the homes we create will stay affordable forever. We plan to engage with our host neighbourhoods in diverse ways, and we're doing all this in an urban area because that's where it's needed.

If you like the sound of this, you can join us as a prospective member or a friend by coming along to one of our meetings; see dates above. If you want to get in touch, click on 'Contact Us' in the main menu.
